Results of the speed marketing pilot

Hey startups

About a month ago I wrote a post about seeking some pilot clients for a project on Syd Startups:

Let’s see how this goes…

Then this happened:

Imagine the soccerballs were people messaging to take up the offer. Original here.

You’re getting this email because you ticked a box at the end of the Airtable form you submitted.

And here I am, from the future.

What worked well:

✅ Learning new AI tools for getting stuff done quickly

✅ Working within a time constraint to generate as much useful material as I could within 1x day

✅ Sticking to shipping - early startup marketing sits in the JFDI (just f*ing do it) category (thanks for this term Matt Lerner)

What didn’t work as well:

🤷🏼‍♂️ With minimal touch from the pilot clients (by design) a lot of assumptions were made towards what would and wouldn’t be useful - I’m still waiting on feedback so I’m in the dark a bit on that one

👨🏽‍💻 Lifting assets from existing client channels - where I could I ripped videos, graphics, fonts, colours etc. to match existing look/feel and get things done

🚫 No way of measuring impact outside of direct feedback

So here’s what was delivered for the 3x pilots…

Client 1

  • Draft guide for B2B outreach
  • 2x email templates for the B2B outreach
  • 5x FB/IG ad placement copy - Link Description, Headlines, Primary Text
  • 6x 15sec social videos in brand template (3x square, 3x vertical)

Client 2

  • 2x email templates for the B2B outreach
  • Short corporate pitch deck (3x slides with value prop in Keynote and PPT)
  • Initial B2B outreach list (5 targets)
  • Art design + QR code for a fridge magnet
  • <30 sec quick explainer video

Client 3

  • 30sec pitch video for B2B outreach
  • One-sheeter PDF explainer (PDF/PPT/Keynote)
  • Position description for remote Research Assistant to assist with B2B outreach
  • Email pitch template for B2B outreach

Each client also received a handover document, a handover video, and working files* for all of the above.**in marketing agency land - this is usually not done because IP and they want to keep you dependent on them.*

Was it a valuable exercise?

Absolutely.

Is it something this segment would pay for?

I don’t know. I wanted to hand things over in a neat bow for the clients to run with - but the reality is they are focused on other things, competing priorities, and might not have the time or expertise to do things the deliverables enable (set up more social ads, commit more outreach, land more appointments) because of the time it takes.

This is my key goal for the next few years:

Build a business that enables me to create value for others, do the things I enjoy doing and are good at, with plenty of time away from the computer to watch my twin boys grow

I still believe productising a marketing service is the way, and I’ll keep iterating - so here’s what I can do for you to thank you for your early interest and opting to hear from me again.

  1. I’m about to launch SpeedMarketingDemos.com - I create a free short video with marketing advice on a challenge you have. Just complete the form and you’ll be emailed (and it will be included in socials)
  2. Missed out on the offer and happy to do a customer interview? Drop a time in via this link - I’d love to hear from you if such a service is valuable for your business, what you see the value to be, or what would need to change for such an offer to work.
  3. All of these initiatives ladder up to what I’m seeking: 3-6 month engagements where I set up new marketing teams for scaling businesses. I do this by hiring a local director/manager and international support staff. I train the team, create SOPs and handover documentation, and pass onto the new vetted marketing leader. I’ve got room for 2 more engagements of this size until the end of the year. If you’d like more information or have a lead on a business that needs this let me know.

Thanks for putting your hand up for the experiment and humouring me by reading through things to this point.
