Teaching is low-cost and high-value
“Rather than doing something for someone, you are walking them through your system. You are teaching them, educating them, on how to improve a certain aspect of their life. You help them navigate the roadblocks that you’ve experienced previously.”
- Dan Koe, There will only be 1 career path in the future
Teaching is an easy way to show how to gain something, solve a problem, or save time, energy, and money.
Teaching is low-cost to share, but high-value for anyone who wants to learn that thing.
It’s easy to generate, focused on being helpful, and a way for you to get attention that doesn’t involve being a celebrity or having an audience of millions already.
I’ll use the the Start Marketing book as an example.
To help sell this book, I can teach:
- Concepts with short social-media friendly graphics and videos
- Appear on podcasts about getting started share ways for listeners to being marketing
- Write an article in a niche like a crafting publication, and adapt the lessons in my book for the arts & craft audience
- Create a downloadable cheat sheet to get people started quickly and offer it for free
- Ask my network to read a preview and share a lesson on their LinkedIn profile with a link to the book sign-up page
You might have seen one of these in learning about this book.
You might be thinking okay Luke, you’ve written an educational book It’s easy to come up with ways to teach with that.
I guarantee there’s a way for every product there is.
This is what true marketing is about. Creatively identifying ways to frame what you offer in way that connects to something people care about.
Here are further ideas on teaching with products I’ve either seen, or coached founders on in the past.
Product: Thing you can teach
- Sleep education product: Five Fast Changes to Your Bedroom to Guarantee a Better Night’s Sleep
- A physical drum tuning kit: The Three Quickest Ways to Get Your Drum Tuned
- A widget for optimising the distribution of energy in your home from your solar roof: Learn the Seven Household Items that Contribute to 80% of Your Energy Bill
- Meditative forest walking tours: What to Take (and Leave at Home) For Your First Forest Bath
I can keep going.
I’ve had a lot of practice.
Each teaching idea is simply looking to pass on some knowledge that informs, entertains, and educates.
Did you notice anything else about these ideas?
They’re not in a particular format.
The topics could be in a blog post, podcast, newsletter, webinar, short video, series of carousel graphics, a sequence of emails, a media interview, and many more.
They share what you’re going to get in a single sentence.
In the pitching world, we call this a hook.
So let’s throw a line in and help you find your hook next.
