Pick one thing at a time
“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”
- Bruce Lee
“Marshy!? Is that you?”
I turned around and there was my old friend Tanya.
It was 2013, and I was standing next to the food stall section of Meredith Music Festival.
She ran up and gave me a hug.
“So what have you been up to?”
The question blew my mind, and it had nothing to do with inebriation levels.
I hadn’t seen Tanya since my 3rd year of university - over 10 years ago.
What do you catch someone up on when you haven’t updated them in 10 years?
What do you pick first?
The reality is you can’t catch them up. You pick one thing that you think would be the most interesting to share, and take it from there.
So let’s flip this back to marketing.
There are decades worth of learnings you can run with to try and improve things - yet this will take you absolutely nowhere.
A much better approach is to pick one thing to work on, notice some improvement, and then move onto the next.
If you’re not sure where to focus - look at where you are on The Priority Ladder and focus there. It’s really easy to get caught up on automation, fancy videos, or a clever animation for your landing page - but the important thing is to focus on improving the parts that lead to the sale first.
Then put it in front of some potential customers and see if you notice any change.
Then keep going.
