"I navigated the diagnosis process as an adult and it's not easy (even with familiarity with the mental health system)."

"Here's some things that helped me:"

"1. The term is misleading. I have mountains of attention - there's just no filter for it. The best description I've read is from the book ADHD 2.0 - a ferrari brain with bicycle brakes. My friend Harry put it even better: you're like a puppy dog Luke 😂"

"2. Time blindness is a thing. It's usually now, and not now. I've offset this with lots of reminders with Siri, planning my day and week, and being kind to myself when there are slippages."
""
"3. Hyperfocus is a double-edged sword. When it's on - and I'm really into something - I can turbo through work, writing, chores, tasks, anything at a rate that's bonkers. This becomes its own exercise in frustration though. It can't be turned on at will, and I've had to manage my own expectations about rate of output and what's reasonable."

"4. In Australia, getting the diagnosis required a referral from a GP. A reference from my existing psychiatrist, and visiting a specialist psychiatrist. It took 6-8 months and that's actually a good run. The waiting lists are massive and as far as I know there's not an easy process to get a diagnosis with the public system. That's right. You need to be able to afford private psychiatry fees, which aren't cheap."

"5. The local FB groups for learning more were super-useful. Less so the day-to-day ranting, much more so the search function and reading up on how people navigated different areas of their life."

"6. I know reading isn't everyone's thing, but there's a tonne of great books out there. I really enjoyed The Drummer and The Mountain, ADHD 2.0, Thriving with Adult ADHD, The ADHD Effect on Marriage (this was mind-blowing), and Taking Charge of Adult ADHD. There's a new one released a couple of months ago called Extra Focus: The Quick Start Guide to Adult ADHD - which is easy to pick-up and go."

"1️⃣ Try and loosen them up with some "get to know you questions" to warm up. One way you can allay nerves is reflecting back their answers with higher energy. (e.g. "That's awesome! Tells us more about that! I love how you're into this" etc.)"

"2️⃣ Give them time. Allow candidates to explain an answer in their words. Assure them that you're just there to listen and learn about how they do things in their way. Let them know that capturing all the detail in their answer helps make the case to the rest of the business. Demonstrate this with lots of nods, smiles, and note-taking and give them confidence."
