I learned something from a lawyer friend."
""
"(Yes - just one thing!)"

"When a massive company like BHP or Woolies puts their legal advising to tender - part of the procurement process is understanding what their tech stack looks like."

"Why?"

"Lawyers cost epic amounts of cash."

"With the volume of work being done - even old mate would go out of business if everything was billed by the hour."

"Legal tech fixes this."

"By asking what tech is employed as part of the quoting process, clients expect technological efficiency to be part of the service instead of everything being done manually."
""
"A mega-biz is not going to accept a bill hundreds and thousands of dollars by the hour for everything being done manually."
""
"Technology can be used to automate form submissions, accelerate bureaucratic processes, and ensures repetitive things aren't done the expensive way."
""
"I'm not in the legal profession."
""
"Unfortunately I hear about broken and manual processes every day."

There's a lot of job movement right now but here's a life pro-tip that you might not be capitalising on."
""
"Regardless of whether you're the one moving or its your beloved colleagues!"
""
"Preserve the relationship. 🤝"
""
"I've kept a lot of friendships over the years with people I've worked with. They are some of my favourite connections because you get this unique blend of someone knowing your work and personal in fairly equal measures."
""
"Here's how I build and maintain those sweet preserves 🍯"
""
"🛫"
">> Pre-departure - get in a final 1:1 coffee/lunch/drink. "
"It's a rare time and I always find the candid perspectives teach me something about myself. Hearing someone's reflections with this lens is wildly interesting and a privilege."
""
"🔗"
">> Capture them on socials. "
"LinkedIn is obvious of course - but if you do, personalise your connection request with something specific to help your memory and theirs. It doesn't have to be. I've got emails, phone numbers, Facebooks, and Instas. Do what works and feels right for you."
""
"⚡️"
">>Reach out once the dust has settled."
"Either you or your old colleague will be settling into a new role. Leave it be, then drop a note for a catch-up when suits. You'll find there's a bit of work gossip - but it gets old pretty quickly. The relatability dissipates and it's just not as interesting to either party any more. How to have an interesting conversation is up to you, I usually share what's lighting me up and delight in finding out what my friend is up to."
""
"🌅"
">>Accept that contact will be less."
"Life gets busy and so do you and your people. You might catch-up 1-2x a year at most and that's totally okay. Things might even drift away to the occasional note or fade away completely and that's okay too. Yet I still have enduring friendships from my first career job at Zenith Optimedia in Sydney, and many more wonderful connections who have lived and moved all over the world."
""
"--"
""
"Writing this out feels funny as this stuff comes as naturally to me as drinking water - but not everyone gets it I know."
""
"I once had an old work contact ask me:"
""
""What's the point, I don't -need- anything from them?""
""
"At the time I struggled to answer this as I don't even think that way."
""
"My answer today is this - "
""
"Building relationships is a practice. Take delight in it, polish your skills, and treat it with care. Every person you meet is an opportunity to keep practicing - nothing more."
""
"That discipline without expectations will help you in any area of your life regardless of whether you're a developer, accountant, customer success manager, or sales (the latter of which has heaps more you can do obviously!)"
""
"I've had all sorts of weird and serendipitous things happen as a result of these approaches and while people are moving I implore you to do the same."
""
"Preserve those relationships."

Is digital marketing part of your fundraising mix?"
""
"Here's some cold hard facts of doing online 🥶"
""
"📈"
"Over time - the cost of using a channel goes up."
""
"Those Facebook ads that cost $1,000 per week last year will now cost $1,100. Be very wary of the client or "specialist" who tells you the cost per click, cost per lead, or cost per whatever has gone down. Your marketing needs a mix, and you need to be able to demonstrate that dollars invested and can lead to more dollars raised."
""
"⚡️"
"The way to beat increasing costs, is to continually innovate."
""
"Have you ever noticed that when there's a "new thing" (insert anything like TikTok, LinkedIn Stories (lol?), BeReal here) there's a pocket of people that rush in and start using it with fervour? "
""
"It's because adding new things can bring in new users, reduce cost per acquisition, or deliver outsized free/cheap organic traffic."
"There are other ways to do "new things" and not all of them will work. But over the long run organisations that are regularly seeing what new things they can introduce to improve win more."
""
"🔒"
"Owning the journey leads to better outcomes."
""
"Once upon a time in my agency days, we could get paid for delivering traffic to a page no matter what happened next. "
""
"Those days are ancient history. Other industries have caught on to this. "
""
"A massive example of this was Thryv's acquisition of Sensis Online - it was getting harder to simply sell advertising to small businesses, and adding Thryv's CRM functionality enables more effectiveness - from seeing the ad to managing leads and interest once they're received."
""
"--"
""
"I'm actively looking for charity fundraisers who know their marketing costs are going up, but are trying to raise more with the same budgets or less."
""
"We're looking to help you by adding smarter two-way SMS messaging into the marketing mix and know it delivers better results."
""
"Hit me up or point me in the direction of someone that needs this and I'll be happy to help their Christmas campaigns 🙏🏼"

"p.s. This pic was snapped during my holiday in QLD last week - I wasn't thinking about work but I am now and want to help 🕶"

I remember my first voice message sent in response to my friend Lindsey Hogg."
""
"She introduced me to the format over WhatsApp, and being able to leave a mini-voice-essay was an easy way to convey tone, excitement, and stress turns of phrase that would otherwise be missed by text."
""
"It lasted about 60 seconds, and went something like this:"
""Uhhhmmmm, ahhhh - and then I did this, oh and then this happened ah""
""
"The inimitable Danny Huang articulates why there's entire generations of people that are much more comfortable with this format than I was when starting (I did improve didn't I Lindsey?)."
""
"He shares eloquently:"
""
"🎚"
"There's much less effort with voice-based communications. It can be engaging, accessible, and more inclusive in an isolating world."
""
"👨🏼‍⚕️"
"It's a format that resonates with our ageing society. COVID and lockdowns absolutely battered the aged care sector - hearing and facilitating more voice is one way to bridge those gaps."
""
"🎙"
"It can helps other challenged communites. High-falutin academic or medical English is hard for anyone to understand - let alone people from CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) backgrounds. Imagine the increased impacts simply explaining things in a relatable voice update can have? "
""
"The voice message sharing experience I have with my friends on WhatsApp are easy for me to do, and meet my busy friends where they're at. "
""
"Recreating that experience at a larger scale and for an organisation's purpose requires more specialised technology and expertise. "

"Make use of the free advice that's available. The last thing any of us want is for an NFP to sign-up and commit to something that doesn't suit them. Or even worse - makes their jobs harder to do. "

Volunteering Australia (VA) hosted a series of strategy workshops to steer its 10 year strategy for growing volunteering across the country."

Today marks two years of sobriety today."
""
"Why post this on LinkedIn?"
""
"For me, work and drinking were intertwined. "
""
"The industries I've worked the most in - agencies, marketing, technology - all had a work hard, play hard culture that I pushed the envelope on."
""
"Becoming sober helped me get clearer on who I want to be, connect with others more spiritually, and move into a position where I can help others with similar lived experiences."
""
"I'm also a big advocate for mental health - and after doing deeper work - decided I'm a better human while sober."
""
"Dry July is a great time to "test the waters" if you're sober-curious - and the range of alcohol-free options like Sobah Beverages and Heaps Normal (in Australia, the range is even broader in UK and US) makes things a lot more manageable for most."
""
"And if the thought of going 31 days without alcohol sounds unmanageable to you - that might be even more of a prompt to give it a try. "
""
"There's no judgment here, it took me multiple times and avenues before I became comfortable being connected to a more authentic version of me."
""
"Stay well! 🙏🏻"

"Don't be misled by your bubble. Sometimes I catch myself thinking "its 2022 - surely that's not..." only to be shocked by a transgression or incident an acquaintance goes through. Pride exists because not everyone gets it - gaps in society's handling of LGBTQIA+ people still need work. This will continue to be the case for years to come."

"It's not always LOUD when proud. I wear my heart on my sleeve and regularly put my story out there because I am comfortable with that. How "out" someone chooses to be is a personal choice and different for everyone. The best you can do is raise the standard for everyone, always practice inclusivity, and adapt your behaviour with warmness and curiosity if there's any feedback."

I attended the Humanitech Summit on Thursday the 19th at the State Library."
""
"It looks at the intersections between frontier technology, supporting those in need, and the ethical questions that arise from using new tools."
""
"Here's what I noticed:"
""
"🧗🏼"
"There are smart people asking hard questions. It's been a while since I've had significant exposure to academic thinking. People shared why they're going deep on these topics, and why it matters. For example, where does the line get crossed with facial recognition - is it detecting your face on a photo at a baby shower? Or while you're snapped on the frontline in a hostile conflict?"

I've been bullish on the NFP sector and the need to help it connect and realise tech's advantages far more quickly. Organisations like the Remarkable Tech, Oxfam Australia, One Girl, and Good Hood are leaning into these capabilities at pace. The most important bit? Listening and empathising before jumping in with a solution to the "problem". YES!"

Here's a question to ask leaders as your career progresses:"
""
""What's something you've changed your mind on in the last 12 months?""
""
"A thought-out answer tells you a lot. Bluff, arrogance, or a non-answer tells you even more."
""
"Something I've changed my mind on in the last year is the 1% pledge."
""
"As I was researching my role, something that really irked me is the concept of "donating" 1% of a company's resources to purpose."
""
"Industry powers the lion's share of the global economy. I used to see relegating looking after the world to a nominal number as reductionist and absolving one's self from using the rest of their resources."
""
"It's black and white thinking and I can see that now."
""
"I remember talking to an old colleague about this and they said - "I don't care as long as the money keeps moving this way"."
""
"Just because it's 1% today, doesn't mean it will be that forever."
""
"When I started my career, I could see "digital" as a trend that I was hitching my focus to."
""
"I see industry's role in helping the world as another. The need to do something is urgent and demands to do something from all citizens will only increase."
""
"The increased emphasis on things like CSR, ESG, DE&I, volunteering, and partnerships will only continue to grow and I see that as a really good and necessary thing."
""
"I'm curious about my network's own experiences in witnessing changes like this so feel free to let me know below, or message me, or even jump on a call."

""So - you know - what's the go between you guys and China?""
""
"My patient colleague laughed and said:"
""
""You're from Australia right? What - 300 years of history?""
""Yeah""
""
"He answered my question with a simple statement:"
""
""Well China and Japan have 5,000 years of relationship between them - that's hard to summarise"."
""
"I thought about that wisdom for a very long time. How we're perceived in the world, and how much is missed."
""
"Since then, I've been on my on process of unlearning and empathising about our country. "
""
"About First Nations people that were here for 50,000 years and still going."
""
"A country that saw its culture attacked, gaslighted, and minimised in less than 1% of the time it has been around."
""
"Celebrating the date that started this is a massive issue. "
""
"How do you even - begin - to articulate just how insulting it is?"
""
"Stories have been passed on inter-generationally 10,000x longer than we've been around."
""
"There's a soul wound that won't heal until substantial, continued, and sustained empathising with the world's oldest culture happens."
""
"I see it and hope that can finally happen in earnest one day."
""
"Until then collective fury will continue to build."
""
"I'm not celebrating tomorrow and will be working. "
""
"There's much, much more that needs to be done but I'm happy to speak up and support changing the date. "

Ben Vasiliou, CEO of Youth Projects visited Whispir last week and shared what they're doing to help homelessness and open pathways out of poverty."
""
"Hosting a live event was a bit of an adjustment (our people dialled in) but Ben shared some killer insights into what makes a for-purpose leader tick:"
""
"1. Money and partnerships. He articulates the model, how it works, and how it is scaled. Connecting philanthropists, government, and corporate together can fuel impact. Ben is unapologetic and loud about the work they do. "
""
"2. Communicating value clearly. They've doubled their revenue profile in 4 years. I've noticed NFPs shy away from commercial conversations - Ben does the opposite of this. I've worked across all industries and the variety is huge. Yet all industries care about value and seeing revenue deployed effectively. Ben sees this "the more money you have, the more impact you have". There aren't many people I associate with that don't care about impact - but being able to point to why something makes economic sense as well is going to attract more partners."
""
"3. Surround yourself with people that are better than you. Ben called out the calibre of his team and mentioned Nic Horton (Marcomms lead) as an example - he surfaces up the most salient stories for Ben to go out to sector and forge further partnerships to create impact."
""
"My favourite share was The Little Social Cafe - founded by Youth Projects."
""
"The team has created a self-sustaining social enterprise during a pandemic in under a year. "
""
"With over 100 employees through the program thus far:"
"- Two-thirds go on to find employment elsewhere"
"- Half the remainder go back to school to build further skills"
"- Youth Projects continues to engage and help all that need it"
""
"Thank you for sharing what impact can look like."
