This is where you start
Alright! I’m ready to learn marketing!
Fantastic.
My question is what are we marketing?
“Oh you know…”
No I don’t.
Marketing amplifies awareness of a thing.
It needs to exist.
You can’t market without a thing to market.
It sounds silly, it is worth spelling out.
Beginners tell me: I’m going to start a business and I need marketing.
Marketing is not the first thing you need.
Usually it’s distracting rather than helpful before you have a product that people want.
To market you need something to sell.
It could be:
- yourself for a job
- a new online store that sells fermented pickles
- an online conference for experts in tech for good
- a membership community for knitting enthusiasts
- professional services in the wellness community
- a book like this one
- an online course that teaches people to automate their administrative tasks
- a post-graduate student’s final sculpture for their visual arts degree
There are many more things.
I want you to pick one and think about how you can bring it to life with the strategies in this book.
And if you got this book to learn more about marketing generally welcome!
Imagine an event, product, service, or widget as you read along.
